Highest Award Winner

 D Runway of Haneda Airport
 (Stainless Steel Lining Jacket)

Applicants: Consortium of construction and engineering companies including major general contractors

Reason for selection:
D Runway of Haneda Airport is a part of the re-expansion project and important social capital, which is required to last 100 years with reasonable maintenance cost.
For the bridge portion of the project, the stainless steel types described below were selected over organic coated carbon steel, which was not considered durable enough, and titanium-clad material, whose initial cost was considered too high. Deciding factors in favor of stainless steel included its high resistance against seawater corrosion as well as superb LCC. In addition, studies were made to reduce sheet thicknesses and a welding method ? indirect resistance seam welding -suited for the application was employed to maximize its cost advantages.
This project has opened up great possibilities for wider use of stainless steel in similar projects in the future and thus deserves the highest award.

Stainless steel types used: SUS312L and UNS N08354

Consumption: Approx. 500 tons
