Tie-rod clasps and stainless steel intermediary posts
for the pagoda of renowned temple Kuon-ji
Applicant: The Japanese Association for Conservation of Architectural
Monuments/Aichi Steel
Reason for selection:
For this project
to enhance quake-resistance of the above described historical wooden structure,
stainless steel was adopted for its superb corrosion resistance in a humid
environment. Another favorable factor was that stainless steel could be used without
welding or cutting in the no-fire-allowed circumstances.
In the selection committee’s view, the adoption of stainless steel for
reinforcing work of this cultural property has elevated the image of the
metal and contributed to social culture.Furthermore, this project has already
led to plans to use stainless steel in restoration works of other cultural
properties and is expected to help increase demand in this field.
