Connecting Bridges for the Sumida River Terrace

 Applicant: Yada Industry Co., Ltd.
Reason for selection:
gThe Connecting Bridges for the Sumida River Terrace (over the Oshima Tributary and the Tsukishima Tributary) are structures whose main parts are made with duplex stainless steel and the spans of approx. 40 and 50 meters make them the longest stainless steel bridges in the country. There are only two other projects in Japan, where duplex stainless has been used for such application.
Harmony with the surrounding scenery is considered in the design and in order to have the shape of the bridges remind people of gyakatabuneh or nostalgic roofed pleasure boats, unique techniques were used - welding the sections of the main girders outdoors, for example.
At the time of installation, taking into account that duplex stainless steel is characteristically hard and difficult to correct, special attention was paid to minimize the heat distortion at welding and also calculating the spring back due to intense processing, caution was exercised when bending the corners of the ground-covering sections.
Duplex stainless steel lightens the burdens associated with such future maintenance work as repainting the bridges and significantly contributes to slashing the life cycle costs.Other advantages offered by having installed these large bridges include expanded mobility of vessels around the entrance of the Sumida River and the creation of new waterfront urban scenery to integrate with nearby buildings and structures.
Stainless steel types used: SUS821L1

Consumption: 200,000 kg (total of the two bridges)
