Duplex Stainless Steel Distribution Reservoirs (Yonago Distribution Reservoirs)
Applicant:Morimatsu Industry Co., Ltd.
Reason for selection:
Duplex stainless steel is used for new distribution reservoirs constructed by Yonago City Waterworks Bureau of Shimane Prefecture. Of these facilities, the central reservoir (16,000m3) is one of the largest square-shaped reservoirs of city water made of stainless steel. The outer surfaces of the reservoirs are required to have aesthetic appeal as a symbol of the community while the facilities, located close to the sea, are subjected to seasonal salt breeze of the Japan Sea. The inner surfaces are in constant contact with water disinfected with sodium hypochlorite. Thus, the material for both surfaces must have high corrosion resistance to withstand severely corrosive environments. At the same time, the material must have high strength to withstand hydraulic pressure when a large volume of water is stored. In consideration of these requirements, the Waterworks Bureau has adopted duplex stainless steel with austenitic and ferritic phases for its “high corrosion resistance” and “high strength” as well as for its advantage in maintenance in that coating of the outer and inner surfaces is unnecessary.
Stainless steel reservoirs have high quake resistance and water-tightness. Besides, they can be built in a short time.
Since concrete distribution reservoirs built around the 1960’s are aging and being replaced, the example of Shimane Prefecture is expected to boost the demand for highly recyclable stainless steel as a preferred material for such application.
