Award winner
Toriide Naruto (metal roof)
Applicant: GANTAN BEAUTY INDUSTRY CO., LTD.
Reason for selection:
Toriide Naruto, located in the Myokensan Park built on the ruins of Muyajo Castle of Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, had been used as Tokushima Prefectural Torii Memorial Museum but after the Museum was moved elsewhere, the quake resistance of this building was enhanced and in February 2016, it was turned into a multi-purpose facility to serve as a citizensf gallery, warehouse for relief supplies and evacuation center for local residents.
As a means to ensure the quake resistance, gHongawarabo Gantan e84h, press-formed and rod-shaped metal tiles, were adopted for the roofing which weigh 1/10 of conventional clay tiles and lessen burdens on the structure.
The tile material is gToughten Zh, hot-dip galvanized stainless steel with sedate appearance, which has a texture different from that of paint or metal gloss and helps revive the unique atmosphere of the Castle on top of providing high quake resistance.
gToriide Narutoh, the name of the building, represents residentsf affection for Ryuzo Torii, a renowned local scholar (1870-1953) and their expectation that the facility will serve as gtoride (fort in Japanese) to protect themh in case of disaster.
gToriide Narutoh will continue to be a symbol for and protector of the residents of Naruto City.
